How had he gotten wrangled into a skirmish with a terrorist organization? [break][break]

Gideon’s luck couldn’t have been worse. He’d come to Granite Cave independent of the current battle raging within - a simple day of field work collecting samples around the rift. Now he was defending against ROCKET grunts trying to advance further into the cavern.[break][break]

Admittedly, his priority was his own safety more so than the portal into the Ultra Deep Sea. Still, he found himself fighting side-by-side with LEAGUE officers, having no other option since ROCKET blocked the exit out.[break][break]

“Wha—” From the shadows a girthy vine sprung forward, wrapping around Gideon’s forearm. A second soon followed, constricting his other arm. The vines’ source quickly emerged from the darkness: a huge TANGROWTH, accompanied by its ROCKET trainer.[break][break]

Things weren't looking good for Dr. Graves.

Then and only then does Katherine emerge from the rift, seemingly in no rush or hurry to catch up to her Beast. A GRASSY TERRAIN spreads in the cave as the Tangrowth INGRAINS its vines into the earth, undoubtedly seeking to quicken their growth.

Pain sparked up his wrists, igniting the nerve endings up the length of his arms.[break][break]

Gideon dug his heels into the rocky earth, trying to prevent the TANGROWTH from dragging him in, but the visceral feeling of his muscles being pulled beyond their reach was both sickening and terrifying. His legs shook, threatening surrender.[break][break]

But then – a rescue! Some sort of odd, insect-reminiscent Pokémon came to his aid, engaging the ROCKET and their TANGROWTH in battle. He nearly stumbled back from the sudden release, but caught himself before falling flat on his ass.[break][break]

"Are you alright?"

The professor had no doubt that there were vine-shaped bruises beneath his sleeves. He rubbed at his arms, slaking the uncomfortable sensation, while looking up to where his savior emerged from the rift.[break][break]

Was that…? It was hard to tell in the gloom, but the woman’s face looked vaguely familiar to him.[break][break]

“Yes… thank you.” There wasn’t much time to continue their conversation beyond that. [break][break]

The surrounding grunts tensed upon seeing his rescuer and her Pokémon enter the fight, releasing more of their own Pokémon to contend with her. Gideon figured he ought to join the fight too, despite his distinct lack of battle prowess.[break][break]

“Flame Charge!” He instructed the VOLCARONA that emerged from its Poke Ball, gesturing for it to attack the opposing TANGROWTH.

"I expect you to—" Before Katherine gets the opportunity to tell the professor that he must fight alongside her, his Pokemon is already released, alleviating her need to command the man. A chuckle escapes her. "Never mind then, as you were."

The Tangrowth, now joined by a Carnivine and a Victreebel, concedes its INGRAIN at the sight of the impending FLAME CHARGE. All three grass-type seek to exploit the visible GRASSY TERRAIN by growing glowing vines, each powered by its own POWER VINE. They thrash about, limbs swinging in an erratic nature to keep both the Volcarona and Pheromosa from reaching them.

A snap of fingers directs the Ultra Beast's attention back to its owner before Katherine issues her own command, "again, please."

Where other Pokemon may feel threatened by the swinging vines, Pheromosa easily rushes towards them, intent on slipping between the small spaces they fail to cover—until she's struck. The grunts cheer in excitement before the alien Pokemon pushes onwards, leaving its DISGUISE behind.

Realization sets upon them only when it's too late. It was unharmed.

The bug-type leaps into the air as moisture condenses around its heels once more, ushering the formation of icicles. She jumps from one grass-type to the other, driving icy spikes into each of them in a brilliant TRIPLE AXEL.

Sure, GIDEON GRAVES was fighting alongside Katherine Fairburne. [break][break]

But neither his nor his Pokémon's battling skills were much to write home about. They had been trained for field work, as educational ambassadors - not to fight against criminals. This would likely become abundantly clear to the Elite Four member within just a few minutes of Gideon's VOLCARNO entering the fray.[break][break]

It's flames burned the edges of TANGROWTH's tendrils, but it was a short-lived attack effortlessly countered. The moth was almost immediately jettisoned backwards by a POWER WHIP. It screeched in pain, not accustomed to actually enduring such assaults.[break][break]

In comparison, Gideon's rescuer made it all look so easy. She barely lifted a finger or said a word of instruction, yet her Ultra Beast expertly danced around the field, dispensing each of the Grass-types in turn.[break][break]

"Arceus... incredible." Gideon breathed, taking the opportunity to step closer to the woman while the ROCKET grunts scrambled to regroup. "Who are you? You made that look effortless."

Katherine, much like GIDEON GRAVES himself, was also not trained to battle against criminals. She was taught to fight like one.

"Keep them grounded," vague yet simple. An order her Pheromosa can't misinterpret that provides their opponents with little to use whilst deciphering the duo's plan. As they scramble to regroup, the relentless Ultra Beast fails to grant them even a moment of reprieve.

Once more, at blinding speed, the alien Pokemon begins to run. The only sign of a trail is the thread of electricity she leaves behind with each step. Moving between both the Rockets and their Pokemon, she weaves a web not unlike an arachnid. Its yellow glimmer is faint on the ground, thin and far too small to notice in the heat of battle. Until the ELECTROWEB ignites and each of them is electrocuted. For what it lacks in force, it compensates in the faint electricity it leaves as a parting gift to their muscles. The spasms are sure to slow them down—just as the Malevolent requested.

"Please, can't you think of a better god's name to invoke near me?" Her eye-roll is preceded by a shake of her head, "besides, it is effortless. I'm not the one fighting, am I?" The mere prospect of wasting her energy by engaging in a true battle versus rocket grunts was insulting, she thought.

Frankly, Katherine now has half a mind to leave Gideon's fate at the hands of the grunts.

"A better god?" Being atheist, Gideon had just blurted out the name more so as a colloquial exasperation than anything else. There were so many 'gods' that humanity worshipped, the list running through his mind looked like something out of a Star Wars intro.[break][break]

"Palkia? Dialga?" The professor probed, feeling a little less on edge now that Katherine Fairburne's Pokémon was dominating the battlefield. "One of the Legendary Beasts, perhaps?"[break][break]

He could go on, but he doesn't. From Gideon's expression and faintly teasing smirk, she'd probably realize he was mostly joking at this point. "Regardless, I apologize if I offended you."[break][break]

"I'm not the one fighting, am I?"

"No, you're not. But someone had to train that... Pokémon? I've never seen one like that before, either."[break][break]

Although the next gods Gideon invokes aren't nearly as insulting as the first one, they are all deemed disrespectful in one way or another. The professor earns a half-lidded, narrow stare from the Malevolent, judging him in those fleeting moments before the fight steals her attention again.

His jokes do not appeal to her sense of humour, and his smirk fails to impress her. Gideon is judged for that, too. His transgressions are wholly considered, his choice to tempt fate by taunting his saviour. Someone ought to teach him some manners, Katherine concludes but decides to leave such a task for a different day. Today is one of the rare days when she regretted being aligned with the League. If she wasn't expected to help him, he'd have been deserted by now.

"Ha-ha-ha. Very funny. It's good to know that there's more to you than just disappointing battle skills."

Katherine's eyes roll once more before her fingers snap, directing Pheromosa's attention to her, "It's taking too long," she chastises the Ultra Beast, "swap out," is her only command. Stray MAGICAL LEAVES strike the alien Pokemon before she performs her U-TURN, returning to her Pokeball just in time for Katherine to send out a different beast to replace it.

"Heat crash!"

The Stakataka cubes materialize in the air, separated, and Katherine's singular order is enough to ignite them ablaze. Gravity ensures that their descent upon the grass types and the grunts is a scorching one, rough and merciless. If Ultra Beasts could be trusted for anything, then it was this exact job-- having no reservations when it came to harming people.

“There’s much more, actually. I just don’t shine very well in a dingy cave like this.” His talents laid outside the battlefield, though he had no way to show her under their current circumstances.[break][break]

The fight pulled Gideon’s attention away from their back-and-forth. His savior continued to dominate while barely lifting a finger, directing her Pokemon with the calculated ease of someone well-versed in applying pressure to the most vulnerable areas for maximum effect.[break][break]

It was mesmerizing. GIDEON GRAVES couldn’t look away.[break][break]

A rookie mistake that cost him one of his Pokemon. VOLCARONA fell at the last minute to one of the ROCKET combatants and was swiftly returned to its capsule. Sizing up the remaining stragglers, however, the professor reasoned he should be able to handle them on his own with his remaining team.[break][break]

“Well…” He was tempted to reply that he wouldn’t mind holding her hand through it all, but figured that was a bit cheesy for someone with such a cutting personality. “I think I can take it from here.”[break][break]

But before she departed…[break][break]
